JOB DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE:    Librarian, Poteau Upper Elementary School

 

REPORTS TO:           Principal

 

NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Upper Elementary school library position is one which requires a person who has the expertise to develop, implement, interpret, and evaluate an overall media program for elementary age children, and teachers of this age group.  The media program must be effective, one that supports the philosophy of the school system and supports and participates in overall school programs.

The librarian must assume the role of consultant to administrators, teachers, students, parents and the community.

The librarian must be an able teacher who can instruct individuals and groups in the use of the library and library tools.  He/she also acquaints, instructs, and encourages the faculty to use various machines and media equipment.

It is the duty of the librarian to provide library and media services and materials to meet the needs and interest of all students.

The librarian must be informed of current developments, thinking and trends in curriculum development and disseminate such information to the faculty when appropriate.

The librarian keeps the media areas a quiet and pleasant place for children to work or do relaxed reading for pleasure.  He/she plans and makes displays and exhibits which contribute to maintaining an atmosphere conducive to effective library and media use.

The librarian provides material and encourages professional growth of the faculty.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

  1. Promote effective utilization of available materials, equipment, and services by faculty and students.

 

  1. Coordinate the evaluation and selection of library resource center materials, enlisting the participation of faculty and students.

 

III.       Initiate and direct inservice training for teachers in the use of instructional equipment and materials.

 

  1. Prepare, allocate and administer the budgeting of funds designated for Library Resource Center materials.

 

  1. Establish and implement policies concerning organization and utilization of materials.

 

  1. Consult with teachers regarding curriculum, plan and guide integration of appropriate materials in the teaching and learning process.

 

VII.     Instruct and encourage students and teachers, both individually and in groups, to use materials and techniques

           effectively.

 

VIII.    Create an environment conducive to learning and personal development.

 

  1. Evaluate existing collection to determine needs; coordinate evaluation and selection of materials.

 

  1. Maintain materials and equipment.

 

  1. Read books, magazines, professional journals, catalog and review sources for background information in selection of materials and equipment.

 

XII.     Conduct inventory of materials and equipment.

 

XIII.    Organize for circulation of materials and equipment.

 

XIV.    Implement cataloging and classification procedures.

 

  1. Assist individual teachers in curriculum planning.

 

XVI.    Provide formal and informal instruction in the areas of literature appreciation, use of materials, and library skills.

 

XVII.  Initiate the development of projects and activities relating to the library and its resources.

 

XVIII. Provide leadership in determining educational objectives of library service.

 

XIX.    Inform students and teachers of new acquisitions of all media materials.

 

  1. Provide displays to publicize such events as book week, library week, book awards, and general use of media.

 

XXI.    Provide news media with media center activities for teachers and students.

 

XXII.  Provide reference services, stimulate and guide students in reading, listening and viewing guidance.

 

 

XXIII. Perform any other library service that would promote and make the media program more effective.

 

XXIV. Help with testing program as needed.

 

XXV.  Carry out other tasks assigned by their principal.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
