Purpose of Job

The school library is often the heartbeat of the school. It is a place students and teachers go to expand and enrich their learning, to find new interests, and to grow intellectually into the lifelong learners we hope them to be. A true school library media specialist will select, order and organize print and non-print materials for the library media center that will reinforce the curriculum. S/he will instruct students in the use of the library as a source of knowledge, enjoyment and inspiration, and will work with teachers in the development of library media programs to satisfy their classroom needs.

 

 

Qualifications

·         Experience in the area assigned preferred

·         Minimum education: Bachelors degree, Masters in Library/Media preferred

·         License: Librarian/Media Specialist, TN Endorsement 473 or equivalent

·         Knowledge of library practices, terminology, and procedures; age-appropriate literature; computer and Internet operations; and concepts of grammar and punctuation.

·         Ability to establish effective working relationships; adapt to changing work priorities; display mechanical aptitude; and work with frequent interruptions.

Essential Functions or Duties

  • Support the effective delivery of a high quality of education for all students; conducts classes and/or activities in a variety of appropriate formats in accordance with lesson plans and age groups (e.g. reading, storytelling, puppet plays, contests, etc.) for the purpose of promoting the use and enjoyment of literature.
  • Assist teachers, students, and administrators for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.
  • Collaborate with other library media specialists across the district and, when possible, in the region to expand and enhance knowledge and expertise as well as library offerings and services
  • Maintain positive relationships with teachers, students, parent(s), and the community
  • Communicate regularly with stakeholders in the school (through a variety of methods)
  • Ensure that the school’s and district’s resources (time, money, people) are used in the most strategic and effective way possible
  • Participate in appropriate and required staff development sessions at the school and/or system level
  • Properly supervise students to maintain proper library environment that supports student learning
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, safe library
  • Maintain inventory and records databases; evaluate books and/or periodicals for retention within collection (e.g. repairing damaged books, recommending retirement of books and/or periodicals) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of current and serviceable books, media, and other library materials.

·         Maintain proper library environment that supports student learning

  • Provide full, willing and helpful cooperation in carrying out all reasonable instructions or extra assignments which are given by the principal before, after and during the school day

·         Perform all duties with integrity, professionalism, and in compliance with all school, district, state, and federal laws/policies.

·         Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

 

Physical Demands

This job may require lifting objects that exceed 20 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:
