Job Description

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of the Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for a Reference and Instruction Librarian to begin August 2026.

This is a non-tenure track fixed-term professional faculty position with an initial appointment of 3 years and renewable for up to five years at a time as qualified by Texas A&M University System Policy 12.07.

Primary duties will include:

  • Managing day-to-day reference services, including coordinating reference desk schedule, service coordination, and quality assurance across in-person and virtual service points. 
  •  Managing and training student employees assigned to the reference desk, including developing training materials, establishing service standards, and providing day-to-day guidance and mentoring. 
  • Monitoring and assessing virtual reference services (chat and email) to improve responsiveness, service quality, and user experience. 
  • Gathering and analyzing data to assess the quality, reach, and impact of reference and instruction services and using data for decision making. 
  • Developing and implementing initiatives to expand and promote reference services across campus, including outreach and engagement with academic and administrative units. 
  • Teaching library instruction sessions and workshops in face-to-face and online environments using the library’s instructional program strategy, relevant professional standards, and information literacy frameworks. 
  • Conducting reference consultations both online and face-to-face.
  • Collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to design and integrate library  instructional materials, including research guides and learning resources. 
  • Promoting library instruction, services, and collections through targeted outreach and relationship-building with assigned departments.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of trends, tools, and best practices in reference services, library instruction, and student engagement through continuous professional development. 
  • Participating in special projects and serving on departmental, university, and professional committees. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited institution. Candidates nearing degree completion will also be considered but must have earned the Master’s degree before appointment. 
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in providing reference or public service in an academic library setting. 
  • Ability to provide library instruction and reference support to students and faculty. 
  • Demonstrated potential for advancement in rank. 

We strongly encourage candidates with:

  • Experience supervising, training, and coordinating student employees or peer staff. 
  • Experience providing in-person and virtual reference services, including chat-based reference platforms. 
  • Experience designing and delivering information literacy instruction using effective pedagogical approaches. 
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and instructional technologies. 
  • Experience assessing library services or using data to inform service improvements. 
  • A strong desire to serve first-generation students. 
  • One to two years of related professional or paraprofessional library experience. 

Starting Salary: $59,000

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.
