Summary/Objective

Working under the supervision of the law librarian, the part time law library specialist’s primary duty is to assist and interact with the public and pro se litigants by providing legal information and materials in response to requests. The law library specialist will also assist in organizing law library resources.
This position requires the ability to work 24 hours per week. 
Following is a breakdown of the hours required:
Monday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (noon to 1:00 p.m. lunch) 
Tuesday - Friday: 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the public by providing legal information and/or directing them to materials that may be helpful in finding answers to legal questions
  • Provide print and electronic materials to public and legal professionals
  • Assists with circulation of law library materials and use of library equipment such as printers and scanners
  • Shelves new publications and all other aspects of collection to maintain current information and accessibility
  • Answers phone and walk-in requests for basic information and/or make referrals
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and county laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines, including legal procedures, processes, and systems
  • Proficiency in computer use, including online systems, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and legal research software
  • Knowledge of business letter writing, grammar, and punctuation
Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and customer service
  • Strong ability to analyze needs and provide the information required as well as the ability to understand the difference between legal information and legal advice
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with a working knowledge of legal reference sources, legal publications, and computerized legal research platforms
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, resourcefulness, and problem-solving abilities to identify optimal research resources and resolve issues using technology
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, judges, clients, representatives of external agencies, county employees and officials, and the public
Ability to: 
  • Ability to use and explain library equipment, facilities, and filing systems
  • Ability to read and understand legal form instructions
  • Ability to analyze and interpret procedures and governmental regulations
  • Proficiency in using online legal research subscription services, the internet, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and other relevant computer applications

Education and Experience

Paralegal associate degree preferred but not required; two (2) years’ experience in a legal office setting; or at least two (2) years in an office setting with extensive customer service experience.

Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job. 
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 20-50 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer, office equipment and to shelve books. 
  • Subject to standing, walking, carrying, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting, lifting moderately heavy equipment, boxes, or books to perform the essential functions.
