GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Employee is responsible for shelving library materials after usage and for maintaining orderliness in the Library including, but not limited to, keeping uniform and tidy shelves arranged according to library cataloging and classification systems and ensuring the library is neat and orderly. Customer service shall be provided as needed, such as giving directions to areas of the library and helping patrons search for desired materials.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions
An employee serving in this position advances the mission of the Library by performing manual and clerical duties and is primarily responsible for sorting, shelving and filing various library materials according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric). Duties include reading shelves for accuracy and re-shelving misplaced items; maintaining the neat and orderly appearance of work and public areas; locating and retrieving library materials from public and non-public areas for library staff or library users; restocking displays; and performing other related work as required.
Library shelvers are expected to demonstrate superior customer service, integrity, efficiency and commitment to innovation, to maintain regular and reliable attendance, and to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends. May use computerized library system equipment to perform assigned tasks.
Demonstrated ability to read and the ability to file or learn to file alphabetically and numerically.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS
REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to perform moderate physical activity, including lifting, bending, pushing/pulling, and standing for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks. Must be able to perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, including lifting books on a continuous basis for up to an eight-hour shift, pushing a fully loaded book cart in and around the library, including long distances (greater than 20 feet); and reaching overhead, bending and kneeling to shelve books weighing up to three pounds. The library environment requires normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates and assistants.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of manuals, policies and procedures, records, lists, catalogs, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, records, receipts, forms, notices, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in librarianship terminology.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; to multiply and divide; to accurately read decimal number, etc.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting - under stress.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the theories, concepts, principles and practices of modern library science.
General knowledge of online catalog programs of the library's computer system.
General knowledge of library techniques, systems, working tools and procedures.
General knowledge of the library's filing system and various types of informational materials in the main or branch facilities.
Ability to use common office equipment, including popular computer-driven word processing, database and file maintenance programs.
Ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring detail.
Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with library patrons of various ages, local politicians, board members and the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
