Description

The Library Services Assistant performs routine information services and circulation duties requiring general knowledge of library functions and services. Additionally, all library staff are expected to use quality customer service with both internal and external customers.

Examples of Duties

  • Supports the Hernando County Public Library’s mission by providing and facilitating innovative lifelong community enrichment, education, and entertainment.
  • Creates positive customer experience for all library customers.
  • Checks out and checks in materials.
  • Registers customers for library cards and renewals.
  • Conducts interviews with customers to clarify information needs.
  • Develops search strategies to fulfill customer requests.
  • Refers more complex questions to appropriate library personnel to ensure timely and accurate response to customer requests.
  • Provides library customers with basic technology assistance.
  • Place holds on materials. 
  • Teach customers how to place holds on materials and other catalog functions.
  • Orders library materials from other agencies.
  • Conducts basic tours to encourage library use through general orientation to the library system and facilities, collections and services.
  • Conducts orientation for customers to online resources including the catalog, databases and eBooks.
  • Participates in the delivery of library programs, outreach and activities that serve to educate users about library services.
  • Collects fines and fees.
  • Assists in the maintenance of library equipment by replenishing supplies, cleaning and reporting breakdowns in order to ensure efficient operation of equipment.
  • Shelves materials and keeps shelves in good order and appearance.
  • Regular attendance and availability during all operating hours, with the ability to work at any Hernando County Public Library location.

Emergency Response 
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. 

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: High School Graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience in the delivery of library services or three (3) years of direct delivery of customer service. 

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License and be insurable by current insurance carrier.

A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion.

Special Requirements

  • NIMS IS-700, IS-800, ICS-100, and ICS-200 within 6 months of employment.

  • The library system’s collection, including basic reference sources, databases, and electronic resources.
  • Hernando County Public Library routines, procedures, and policies.
  • Dewey Decimal System.

Equipment Used

  • Motor vehicle, personal computer, cash register, library automation system and other related software, copier/printer and other general office equipment.

Physical Demands

  • use of hands, hearing, speaking, walking, and visual acuity
  • sit, stand, walk, bend
  • light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects

Environmental Conditions

  • Working inside and closely with others will be constant.
  • Will be exposed to dry and dusty conditions.
  • Works in a relatively safe, secure, and stable work environment.

Grade:  1

  • Salary Disclosure: Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity.
