POSITION SUMMARY

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Adult Services Outreach Program Specialist plays a vital role in expanding access to library resources, programs, and services for adults in the community. This position focuses on developing and implementing outreach strategies to engage and connect with adults of all backgrounds and interests, including underserved populations. The Adult Services Outreach Program Specialist collaborates with community organizations, senior centers, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to promote the library's adult services and create meaningful opportunities for lifelong learning, personal enrichment, and community engagement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
            

  • Develop and implement adult services outreach strategies: Create and execute comprehensive plans to reach and engage adults in the community, with a focus on underserved populations. Identify target audiences and develop tailored outreach initiatives to effectively promote library resources, programs, and services.

  • Conduct outreach activities and presentations: Actively engage with adults in the community through presentations, workshops, and outreach events. Deliver engaging and informative sessions on library resources, digital literacy, lifelong learning opportunities, and other relevant topics to meet the diverse needs and interests of adults.
  • Coordinate adult programming and events: Plan, promote, and oversee a variety of adult-focused programs and events, such as author talks, book clubs, lectures, workshops, and cultural activities. Collaborate with library staff, community partners, and volunteers to ensure the successful implementation of programs that engage and enrich the adult community.
  • Develop and distribute promotional materials: Create compelling content for various channels, including newsletters, social media platforms, community bulletin boards, and local publications. Effectively communicate the value and benefits of adult services and programs offered by the library to the target audience.

  • Oversee and assist with library collection development, reader’s advisory, materials circulation, and deliveries to homebound library patrons.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with adults of diverse backgrounds and interests.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with library resources, programming, and adult learning principles.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and evaluation methods to measure outreach outcomes.
  • Proficient in using technology and software applications such as databases, Microsoft Office, social media platforms, and graphic design software and tools.  
  • Knowledge of the operation principles and practices of a public library and practices of library science.
  • Knowledge of the use of computer systems including on-line systems, computer software, printers, and other peripheral hardware.
  • Skill in providing customer service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, officials, and the general public.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by outreach events and programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • Associate degree library science or bachelor’s degree in communications, adult education, or other related field.
  • Proven experience in adult services, community outreach, or a similar role.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with adults of diverse backgrounds and interests.


SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform medium work frequently exerting up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.   This work also involves the physical abilities of balancing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, kneeling, lifting, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, performing repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, and walking.  An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, for extensive reading; for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.
