General Definition of Work

The job of Librarian Assistant is performed for the purpose of supporting the daily operations of the school library; assisting students, staff, and visitors with access to library resources and technology; maintaining and organizing print and digital collections; promoting literacy and information literacy skills; managing circulation activities; and providing clerical, technical, and customer service support to ensure an effective, welcoming, and efficient learning environment.

Support 5; 185 days/ 7 hours per week

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Rock Hill Schools. Rock Hill Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assists Media Specialist and other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Knowledge of library/media center operations, circulation procedures, and educational technology resources.
  • Assists assigned teachers, students and other personnel for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.
  • Coordinates media requests from individual sites for the purpose of providing orientation, training and ensuring assignments are completed appropriately.
  • Distributes various books and media for the purpose of providing requested classroom reference materials.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of educating them on the proper use of the media resources (i.e. classroom system, use of equipment, care of materials, etc.)
  • Inventories equipment and materials in media center for the purpose of documenting losses and/or maintaining availability of materials.
  • Maintains audio/visual equipment and books for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items.
  • Monitors activities of media center for the purpose of maintaining appropriate working atmosphere.
  • Prepares various documentation for the purpose of providing supporting information and/or conveying information to others for their action.
  • Promotes media center use related to special holidays, seasonal activities, etc. for the purpose of motivating students to use the media center resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of library/media center operations, circulation procedures, and educational technology resources.
  • Understanding of student confidentiality requirements, district policies, and recordkeeping practices.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with a strong customer service focus when working with students, staff, parents, and visitors.
  • Proficiency in library management systems, computer applications, and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to assist students and staff with locating, accessing, and utilizing print and digital resources.
  • Ability to maintain organized collections, inventories, and instructional materials.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.
  • Ability to support literacy initiatives, instructional activities, and the overall mission of the school media center.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of clerical or administrative experience in a school or customer service setting (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, with strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool, Infinite Campus).
  • Proven ability to maintain confidential records and handle sensitive information in compliance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional demeanor with a welcoming attitude and strong commitment to customer service.

Special Requirements

  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
  • Provide a valid TB Test prior to employment

Physical Requirements/Work Conditions

  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally required to sit.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, filing, and operating office equipment.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving of materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual acuity to read data, reports, and computer screens for prolonged periods.
  • Hearing and speaking ability sufficient to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and during meetings.
  • Mobility to move between workstations, offices, and athletic or school facilities as needed.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and stoop in the performance of routine office tasks.
  • Stamina to maintain focus and attention to detail while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Frequent interaction with parents, students, and staff in person, by phone, and by email.
