Adult Programming & Outreach Librarian
City of Sun Prairie-
Under the supervision of the Head of Adult Services, the Adult Programming & Outreach Librarian is responsible for providing library service and programming for adult library patrons and community members, in and outside of the library. Ensures that adult patrons of the library are provided with various cultural, recreational, and educational information and related materials and programs. Provides community outreach services and programming. Provides direct assistance to patrons at service desks and assists with collection development and readers advisory activities. Serves as part of the Library’s Operational Supervisors team to oversee daily operations.

- Plans, coordinates, and presents library-related programs for adults and general audiences.
- Markets and promotes adult library programs, materials, and services to the general public.
- Coordinates outreach efforts to adults in the community, including site visits and home delivery service.
- Acts as supervisor on duty as needed, including evenings and weekends. Administers and enforces city and departmental rules and regulations, procedures, and policies. Resolves issues or problems with patrons.
- Oversees the day-to-day activities of the library for public services and serves for the director in his/her absence, handling emergencies and problems with patrons.
- Participates in Operational Supervisors Team monthly meetings.
- Supports, consults, and instructs Adult Services staff and other staff as appropriate on Adult Services responsibilities.
- Provides reference, reader’s advisory, bibliographic instruction, and other patron assistance services to all ages.
- Assists patrons in the use of print/scan/fax equipment, computers, mobile devices, and emerging technologies.
- Develops and maintains collections in assigned areas by selecting, evaluating, and weeding materials, and participating in collection diversity audit.
- Merchandises library materials through displays, bibliographies, and social media content.
- Develops partnerships with the community to provide programs and services.
- Maintains the confidentiality of library records.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements of Work

Master’s degree in library science plus three years of increasingly responsible public library experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability, and skills:
Knowledge of - Considerable knowledge of library methods and procedures and modern administrative theory and practices.
- Thorough knowledge of library’s policies and procedures and ability to apply them in a supervisory role.
- Thorough knowledge of cataloging, classification and the principles and practices of acquisitions, processing materials and shelving.
- Considerable knowledge of adult literature.
- Ability to respond to the needs and interests of all library patrons.
- Considerable knowledge of current and emerging technologies and demonstrated ability to apply them to library operations.
- Considerable knowledge of planning and administering a budget.
- Requires fluency in English the language, grammar, and spelling.
Ability to - Ability to use library-related computer software and manage computerized files with speed and accuracy and use library equipment properly, which requires knowledge of databases and search methods, including use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access databases, digital graphics software and digital photography.
- Ability to collect and interpret statistical data, analyze information, and prepare reports and recommendations.
- Ability to direct the work of others.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively with staff and public and maintain effective public relations.
- Ability to establish a positive relationship with Library Board of Trustees, staff, Friends of the Library, Library Foundation, library volunteers, library organizations, other city departments, and the public.
- Ability to work with and meet the needs of diverse populations.
Skill in - Requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail when entering and maintaining various data.
- Development and coordination of library programming for adults and general audiences.
