The Library Media Specialist plans, implements and evaluates the school library media center program, policies and services; coordinates the planning and implementation of an information skills continuum; collaborates with teachers in implementing integrated instructional activities; serves as an information specialist to assist teachers and students; and performs other related duties that may be required or directed. The Library Media Specialist reports directly to the Building Principal.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Manager
1.Work with administration to develop student-centered goals for library media services
2.Plan and administer a library media program which adequately meets the learning and teaching needs of the school community as scheduling permits/allows
3.Manage the utilization of the library media facility
4.Work with the administration to develop and administer a budget for the library media services
5.Act as a resource in the development and implementation of grants related to library media services
6.Trains and supervises support staff, student aides, and/or volunteers
7.Develop short and long-range goals to guide the development of the library media program
8.Work collaboratively with district administration and other library media specialists to plan and implement an information skills continuum, research strategies, and the use of resources and equipment
9. Promote the library media program services and materials by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff and the Beverly Public Library
10.Develop and implement policies and procedures to accommodate a "mixed" environment at the secondary level with some classes scheduled for regular times and flexible access for staff and students
Teacher/ Instructional Consultant
11.Collaboratively plan and teach instructional units with other teachers, incorporating the Curriculum Frameworks and Massachusetts Library Media Program Standards for 21st Century Learner as scheduling permits/allows
12.Help students develop attitudes, habits, and skills leading to lifelong library use
13.Provide group and individual instruction in information skills, research strategies, and use of resources and equipment
14.Instruct students to be discerning, responsible, and ethical users of information
15.Serve as a resource to administrators, teachers, and students, and parents (as time allows)
16.Assume a leadership role in promoting the principles of intellectual freedom by creating and sustaining an environment encouraging free inquiry and exposing students to a broad range of ideas
Information Specialist
17.Integrate available resources and technologies to produce authentic learning experiences
18.Assist faculty and students in identifying information resources and ideas and in interpreting and communicating intellectual content through available print collections (references, periodicals, fiction & non-fiction books, etc.), audio-visual hardware/software collections, computer databases, and school archives
19.Maintain and enhance professional knowledge in trends in information literacy and technology by participating in professional organizations and professional development activities which relate to the library media program
Compensation is set in accordance with the
Beverly Teachers Association Unit A collective bargaining agreement and is commensurate with experience and education.
