JOB SUMMARY

 

Develops and implements strategies, best practices, standards, and technologies that support discovery, access, management, and preservation of the SLCo Archives digital collections in accordance with professional archival standards, in addition to processing of analog records. Provides reference services to the public and to county agencies.    

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program or equivalent degree. 

Experience in accessioning, arrangement, processing, description, and preservation of analog and multi-format collections, including born digital, digitized, audiovisual, and photographic materials. 

Experience providing reference services using original records.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Assists the Archives Manager with the management of digital records for ingest, storage, preservation, and access according to professional standards.
  • Manages the web archiving program, including creating and monitoring web crawls, performs quality control checks, and creates descriptive metadata for web content.
  • Conducts all facets of processing projects for a variety of formats, including physical rehousing, agency history research, and development of descriptive guides for records.
  • Provides reference services (in person, online, and over the phone) to a wide range of users, including conducting reference interviews to determine the appropriate records and finding aids needed by researchers.
  • Assists researchers with content analysis of historical records and conducts needed research to fulfill requests.
  • Promotes positive public relations regarding the collections with all patrons and Salt Lake County agencies.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

 

  • Current and emerging practices for preserving archival materials in all formats.
  • Tools and workflows supporting the management of digital records, including digital preservation systems and data curation tools.
  • Archival community metadata content, structure, and preservation standards.
  • Archival theory, relevant legal and ethical regulations, and best practices that govern the arrangement, description, and use of archival materials.
  • Preserve and provide access to digital records.
  • Work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent research skills utilizing primary source records.
  • A strong user focus and service orientation, with advanced customer service skills.
  • Work both independently and in a team environment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Must be able to stoop, bend, reach, crouch, climb ladders to reach high shelves, and lift up to 40 pounds on one's own to retrieve and re-file records.  This position will work at the Salt Lake County Records Center and Archives located in West Valley City, Utah.
